From Beth’s Elementary Education Blog April 30, 2009
In Beth’s blog she discusses ways to avoid teacher burnout. I think it is good to start thinking about adapting some of these habits early in order to set good boundaries once my teaching career begins. She discusses first the importance of asking for help. She stresses the fact that with a little bit of planning and training of volunteers, student parents or friends, you may have some valuable time saving opportunities. She also emphasizes not sweating the small stuff. This is something I will really try to remember because sometimes I know that my perfectionist tendencies cause me unnecessary stress. Third, she reminds teachers to leave their role as teacher in the classroom, rather than maintaining that role at home in their personal lives. I also think this is very wise advise. She gives a reminder to take time for yourself. I think this is important for all people, regardless of their profession. Finally, she says it is important to remember why you teach. I think it will be so helpful to remember this piece of advice when faced with adversity. I know that I want to be a teacher to try to make a difference in my students’ lives and I don’t ever want to lose site of that!

From the Dangerously Irrelevant Blog April 12, 2009
Scott Mcleod posted an article on his blog that discusses the fact that one area in which education could stand to be improved is in leadership. He discusses the fact that he feels that many administrators who make decisions regarding technology in schools are people who have no understanding of the technology and are therefore unable to make wise decisions for their schools. He believes that many administrators have not been immersed in technology and that their licensure preparation programs have not prepared them for the decisions they need to make regarding the use of technology in their schools. He discusses the fact that resources should be allocated to provide ongoing training to administrators in order to get them on board with the increasing use of technology in the world. He is a resident of Iowa, but these are issues that are definitely relevant throughout the country. I think he has a valid point, but I also found myself wondering if it would be wise to utilize already dwindling resources on training administrators when these funds could be used to benefit students more directly.
